RAF-2203 Latvija: A Versatile Microbus of the Past

RAF-2203 Latvija, produced by the Riga Factory from 1976 to 1997, was a microbus widely used as a taxi and utility vehicle. In the 90s, these "Rafiks" were replaced by more modern transportation for safety reasons. However, they still remain popular in some Caucasian republics and remote regions of Russia.

The Unique Features of RAF-2203 Latvija

One unique feature of these microbuses was that they were rarely provided for personal use, and only to large families. For this purpose, a limited number of the "Lux" model was produced. This 8-seater transport offered increased comfort with convenient and safe child seats. Specialized vehicles were created under the supervision of industry experts, who provided recommendations for the internal equipment of the vehicle. For example, surgeons and emergency doctors were invited to design the interior of an ambulance version.

RAF-2203 was constructed based on the previous RAF-977DM model and retained its main characteristics - a four-door microbus with the chassis of the GAZ-24 "Volga". However, there were some drawbacks. The engine was located above the front axle, which led to poor vehicle performance and constant damage to the front suspension. Additionally, the drum brakes on all wheels did not contribute to good handling. In 1987, the microbus was modernized, following the updates made to the Volga, by adding disc brakes and slightly modifying the engine, which improved its performance. This upgraded model was named RAF-22038.

Various Models of RAF-2203 Latvija

In 1987, the factory produced a transitional model, RAF-2203-01, to test new developments. From 1988 onwards, a fundamentally new version of the "Latvija" was introduced - the 22038-02. This microbus used the chassis of the GAZ-24-10 and had slight external changes. Another modification, RAF-22039, with increased seating capacity of up to 13 people, went into production in 1993.

The range of models included the following:
- RAF-22031: Equipped with complex medical equipment for ambulances, this model was widely used by medical institutions in the USSR and friendly countries.
- RAF-22032: Known as the "marshrutka" or shuttle bus, this comfortable and spacious microbus can be seen in many old films.
- RAF-22033: Used as a police service vehicle.
- RAF-22034: Used as a fire service vehicle.
- RAF-2914: A treasure for rescue services of its time, this model was specifically designed for emergency medical services, taking into account all the details and features of resuscitation equipment.
- RAF-3311: A flatbed truck, and several other modifications.

Despite the discontinuation of production, the RAF-2203 Latvija microbus remains a symbol of the past, evoking nostalgia and serving as a reminder of its versatile applications in various industries.
